Happy Halloween! 7 Spooky Classical Pieces Kids Love to Hear and Play

Happy Halloween from Musipire: spooky Halloween music for kids, piano keys, pumpkins and a full moon

Happy Halloween from all of us at Musipire! Whether your child is a pumpkin, a superhero or a rock star tonight, we hope your family has a safe and happy Halloween.

Halloween is also the perfect excuse to enjoy some of the most dramatic music ever written. Here is our favorite Halloween music for kids: seven spooky classical pieces that children love to hear, and many love to learn.

7 spooky classical pieces kids love

  1. Grieg – In the Hall of the Mountain King. It starts on tiptoe and ends in a wild chase. Simple piano arrangements make it a favorite first “spooky” piece for beginners.
  2. Saint-Saëns – Danse Macabre. Skeletons dance at midnight. The solo violinist even retunes one string to make it sound eerie.
  3. Bach – Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The most famous haunted-house opening of all, written for organ and loved by piano students.
  4. Mussorgsky – Night on Bald Mountain. A stormy gathering of witches that fades away at dawn with the sound of church bells.
  5. Gounod – Funeral March of a Marionette. A playful, creepy march for a puppet’s funeral, famous as a classic TV mystery theme.
  6. Dukas – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. An apprentice’s spell goes wrong and enchanted broomsticks take over: a story children follow easily by ear.
  7. Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata, first movement. Dark, quiet and moonlit, and a dream goal for many intermediate piano students.

Make it a family Halloween concert

After trick-or-treating, turn off the lights, put on one of these pieces, and let everyone guess what story the music is telling. If your child plays an instrument, have them perform one piece for the family in costume. A two-minute living-room concert is a great confidence booster.

Learn to play your own spooky favorites

Many of these pieces have arrangements for beginners and intermediate students. Musipire offers private piano lessons, violin lessons, guitar lessons, voice and singing lessons, drum lessons and viola lessons in Elmhurst, Queens, for children and adults at every level. Our teachers can help your child choose a piece they are excited to learn.
