Why Every Child Should Perform: 5 Things the Stage Teaches Young Musicians

Music performance for kids in Queens: a young Musipire violinist bows on stage after his performance

Every parent who signs a child up for lessons hopes for the same moment: the day their child walks onto a stage, takes a breath, plays, and bows. At Musipire, our music school in Elmhurst, Queens, we have watched thousands of those moments since 2003, and we have learned that music performance for kids is about far more than one concert. Here are five things the stage teaches young musicians.

1. A concert date turns practice into a goal

Ask a child to “go practice” and you may get ten distracted minutes. Give them a performance date, and practice suddenly has a purpose. Students focus harder, plan their week, and improve faster when there is a stage to prepare for.

2. They learn to finish a piece, from the first note to the last

Preparing for an audience means truly learning a piece: the notes, the rhythm, the musical shape, and the ability to play it from beginning to end without stopping. That is a different skill from practicing bits and pieces, and many students only build it on stage.

3. Confidence that grows with every performance

The first time is nerve-wracking. The second time, the nerves are smaller. By the third, children walk out with their heads up. Standing in front of people and sharing something they worked hard on becomes something they know they can do, at school, in interviews, and for life.

4. Resilience: what to do when a note goes wrong

Every performer misses a note sometimes. On stage, children learn to keep going calmly instead of stopping. It is one of the most valuable lessons music teaches, and it carries far beyond the piano bench.

5. Music is meant to be shared

Music is not finished in the practice room; it is finished when someone hears it. A child on stage inspires classmates, brothers and sisters, and every family in the room, and parents leave with a memory they will keep for years.

Performance opportunities at Musipire

Every winter and spring, Musipire students perform in our Student Concerts. Beginners prepare a short piece of one to two minutes, and advanced students three to five minutes. Teachers help each student choose the right piece and get ready, and the stage is set with a professionally tuned grand piano. It is a warm, real audience of families, and for many children it becomes the moment they fall in love with music.
